Membership to the organization is free and is open to underrepresented veterans, including women, people of color, LGBTQ, and non religious or religious minorities. We also welcome allies to the community including military family members and supporters

HISTORY OF MINORITY VETS​

MVA was founded in 2017 by Lindsay Church and Katherine Pratt.
 
Church and Pratt first began their work in 2014 through the Husky United Military Veterans where they built a Diversity Committee that celebrated underrepresented groups within the student veteran community at the University of Washington.

Our Members have rights to:

  1. Be treated with respect and dignity by all members and leaders of MVA.
  2. Not be discriminated against based on race, color, ethnicity, religion, national origin, political affiliation, veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, or socio-economic status.
  3. Not be harassed, verbally or physically, in any manner, by any MVA member or leader, either in person or through online/digital mediums.
  4. Exist in MVA spaces (online or in person) free of sexual/romantic advances or harassment by any MVA member or leader.
  5. Participate in any affinity groups with which they identify, without challenge or qualification.
  6. Make your preferred name/s and pronouns known and to be addressed accordingly.
  7. Submit a grievance against any member or leader of MVA for violation of these community guidelines, and for that grievance to be fully considered and addressed through an accountable and transparent process.
  8. Provide a defense if accused of violating these community guidelines, and for that defense to be fully considered and addressed through an accountable and transparent process.

All MVA members have the responsibility to:

Responsibilities:

  1. Treat all members and leaders of MVA with respect and recognition of their dignity.
  2. Not discriminate based on race, color, ethnicity, religion, national origin, political affiliation, veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, or socio-economic status.
  3. Not verbally or physically harass, shame, or belittle any MVA member or leader, either in person or through online/digital mediums.
  4. Not make sexual/romantic advances toward any MVA member or leader while in MVA spaces (online or in person).
  5. Not challenge or qualify the identities of other members.
  6. Address others by their preferred name/s and pronouns.
  7. When engaging in discussion:
    • Enter all conversation intentionally and in good faith.
    • Expect and accept discomfort.
    • Listen actively for understanding and ask honest questions.
    • Assume positive intentions of the group and our members and center on MVA’s mission, vision, and values as a point of reference.
    • Acknowledge intent when addressing impact.
    • Speak to share authentic ideas, thoughts, and experiences, not to dismiss, degrade, or compete with those of others.
    • When offering a differing opinion, do so respectfully and only after allowing the other speaker to fully articulate their position and reasoning, affording their perspective the consideration we all deserve.

If you believe a member or leader of MVA has violated these these Rights & Responsibilities, you can submit an internal grievance to MVA at report@minorityvets.org. These grievances will be sent directly to the Chair of the Board of Directors.

If you need help or are in crisis, a variety of resources can be found at MVA Resources. This list is ongoing so please return periodically for additions.

Please remember that minoritized communities are impacted differently in situations involving police/legal interventions, and consider mobile crisis teams and other alternatives to law enforcement when possible and safe to do so.
