Minority Veterans of America’s Emerging Leaders Program is designed to invest in developing the next generation of minority veteran leaders as they continue to make differences in their own communities.

Emerging Leaders Program

The Emerging Leaders Program is open to veterans of color, women, LGBTQ, and (non)religious minority veterans.

Working to address the leadership gap that exists for minority veterans, the program includes an annual retreat, 12 months of personal and professional development opportunities, and mentorship from community partners, career coaches, and program alumni.

Our Emerging Leaders Program consists of core training, a weekend retreat, 12-months of leadership development, and mentorship and coaching.

Emerging Leaders

The Emerging Leaders Program was born from our Emerging Leaders Retreat, piloted in Seattle in 2019, where MVA welcomed 25 individuals from around the country for a three-day leadership retreat. The retreat has evolved into an ongoing development program complete with training opportunities and the facilitation of a supportive cohort community.

Core Training

  • Minority Vets Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Summit offered in conjunction with the Emerging Leader Retreat

Emerging Leaders Retreat

  • 3-day retreat focusing on connection to community, establishing relationships, and learning basic community organizing principles

12 month Leadership Development

  • Monthly group meetings with continued personal and professional training

Mentorship & Coaching

  • Each participant will be paired with a professional mentor or career coach

Emerging Leaders Logistics


Day 0 of the program, named "The Summit" will be hosted using the vFairs interactive platform and will include a  participant lobby, live stages and sessions, and an interactive exhibit hall for employers and resource providers.  All content will be hosted on the conference website for one month following the event. Following The Summit, the remainder of the program will take place on Microsoft Teams.

I've applied. Now what?

Check details

Applications closed on September 27, 2020. Applicants will be selected after reviews of short essays and brief interviews. The cohort will be selected and notified by October 15, 2020. Once selected, participants will complete a few assessments, and meet briefly with the program manager to explore and determine personal goals for the program.
